Bump Keys

In case you haven't heard about bump keys... Good thing to have, and to protect yourself against.

Very interesting. Good video. Thanks for the heads-up, Ace. I had no idea about this. I'd like to have one of those keys. I wonder how to get one.

Got to have a diff key for each lock maunfacturer woodman. Schlage, Kwikset, Master, etc. Pretty sure some different models within particular brands have diff keys.

Try http://www.bumpkey.us/ .

Thanks for the link stranger. My son needs a set of these. He manages properties and has to drill locks often. This may save him some headaches.

The Hollies - Long Cool Woman (in a black dress).

Youtube video with music below the lyrics......awesome song - great bass line!!!!!

Saturday night I was downtown
Working for the FBI
Sitting in a nest of bad men
Whisky bottles piling high

Bootlegging boozer on the west side
Full of people who are doing wrong
Just about to call up the DA man
When I heard this woman singing a song

A pair of 45's made me open my eyes
My temperature started to rise
She was a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a 5'9, beautiful tall
With just one look I was a bad mess
'Cos that long cool woman had it all

I saw her headin' to the table
WITH a tall walking big black cat
Well Charlie said I hope that you're able boy
'COS I'm telling you she knows where it's at
When suddenly we heard the sirens
And everybody started to run
I JUMPED DOWN AND ACROSS THE TABLE
When I heard somebody shooting a gun

Well the DA was pumping my left hand
And then she was a-holding my right
Well I told her don't get scared
'Cos you're gonna be spared
Well I've gotta be forgiven
If I wanna spend my living
With a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a 5'9 beautiful tall
Well, with just one look I was a bad mess
'Cos that long cool woman had it all

Had it all

Other great songs by The Hollies: here are just 3 - that have a dozen you probably have heard if you like later 60's music...

Re: Bump Keys

A small screwdriver and a slim steel pick turned up at the end. Slide in the pick to the end. Use the screwdriver to turn the barrel slightly and hold pressure on it. Then slide the pick along the tumblers until they are all raised and held in place by the sideways pressure.

May take a couple of runs with the pick but you'll know when you've got it. I don't know anything about double deadlocks and the like.

Its a nice technique he's got there. Less fiddling around if it works like that everytime.

I know how to pick locks. Bump keys are 10 times easier and faster -- as long as you have one to fit the lock. Of course they're pretty easy to make, too, if you need to.

Re: Bump Keys

Check out medeco locks. We had them installed after learning about bump keys.

They are expensive (around $350.00-400.00) each. You can not have the keys reproduced once the lock is installed. You must have a company code to order a replacement key.

No more bump key worries.

Medeco keys are super cool.....impossible to pick.....not only do the tumblers have to be set at the correct heigth.....they each must rotate to a correct angular orientation!

Medeco = very safe key.....otherwise....keyed locks are easy to defeat quickly.

Medeco locks can and have been picked

Silly question of the day - is it legal to possess these bump keys?

There you have it. Positive proof that locks and keys are for honest people.

Yeah most thugs throw a brick through your window. Or just kick the door in.

Re: Bump Keys

I have a full set of bump keys, from www.ukbumpkeys.com - opens every lock I've tried with them, and with a bit (quite a bit) of practice, you can do it with just a flick of your fingernail, no bump tool required. I can open every keyed lock the key fits, and the full set fits virtually every "normal" type lock.
From inside, if you use the finger flick and not a bump hammer, it is no noisier than someone slowly putting in a real key and turning it.
No use against bolts or deadlocks, of course - that's when the brick becomes the key.

The main problem with regards to people using bump keys is, if you have no dog, alarm etc. - the thief can let himself into your house in the middle of the night, take your $2000 laptop or whatever, and let himself out again - silently. And your home insurance won't pay out - because it leaves no trace of a break-in. No prints, no damage, no nothing...

Probably depends on your local laws. Mere possession of the tools may be OK, but if you were caught using them to break into a property not belonging to you, you'd probably be screwed with "possession of criminal tools".

Re: Bump Keys

In the UK it is classed as going equipped for theft, breaking and entering, whatever they choose - but as the majority of front door locks are either a simple Chubb or Yale, 2 extra keys on your key ring isn't going to get picked up by any police officer.
Biometric front door locks are now around the same price as a good quality un-bumpable keyed lock - and also much cooler! They are made to look pretty much identical to a standard lock as well, so they don't shout "LOOK AT ME, I HAVE SOMETHING VALUABLE I DON'T WANT STOLEN!!!!"
